A nationalized healthcare plan that uses federal funds to pay for abortion is deserving of any measure available to remind members of Congress that they MUST accurately represent the values of those who elected them.

Members of the Senate Financial Services Committee are voting today, September 29th, on the healthcare bill introduced by Democratic Chairman Max Baucus. The bill, otherwise known as America’s Healthy Future Act of 2009, comes at a proposed cost of $856 billion.

Senator Baucus’ proposal contains “an array of pro-abortion mandates and federal subsidies for elective abortion,” according to the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). The bill provides for “massive” federal subsidies to be given to private insurance plans and cooperatives chartered by the government that would pay for elective abortions.

President Obama has claimed that no federal dollars will be used to pay for abortions but the NRLC reports that the Baucus bill provides $6 billion dollars for the establishment of health insurance cooperatives. The bill puts no limitations on the use of the co-op funds to “pay for abortions or the subsidizing of plans that pay for elective abortions.”

The renewal of the Hyde Amendment (which prohibits the use of taxpayer money for abortion through the Medicaid program) on September 30th is essential because without it the NRLC says that “many private insurance plans could be forced to include abortion on demand as a mandatory benefit in the minimum benefits package.”

Americans United for Life (AUL) has provided the following information regarding abortion and the Baucus Bill:

* Allows qualified health plans to provide coverage for all abortions and mandates that at least one plan in each state exchange provide coverage of all abortions;
* Permits “cost-sharing credits” to go to private plans that cover abortion services provided that the plans “segregate” the funds and use only premium dollars to pay for the abortion services (however, this accounting mechanism does not hide the fact that the government is allowing the plans that cover abortions to receive the credits);
* Would allow the federal government to mandate abortion coverage for abortions in private health insurance if the Hyde amendment ever fails.
* Is not funded through the Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS) Appropriations Bill, so the Hyde Amendment does not apply to the bill.

The Baucus healthcare bill supports the usage of federal funds, OUR hard earned tax dollars, as a means to kill the innocent and it must be stopped.
